Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park the primate capital of the world

Kibale National park in the tropical forest of covers the area of 795 Sq. Km and established in 1940s as a forest reserve. Due to the biodiversity of this forest, it was upgraded to a national park. Now is a home to 71 mammal species and 370 bird species. A home to 13 primate species and  known for the largest population of Chimpanzees which makes it top destination for chimpanzee trekking.

Apart from the popular Chimpanzees, other primates include red colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, baboons and more. The bird list in this park include some species which are endemic to Albertine region lik Black-capped apalis, collared apalis, blue-deaded sunbird, purple-breasted sunbird among others.

To access Kibale national park, you can go by road or by air. By road, you can reach via Fort Portal or via Mbarara from kampala. By air you can access to the airstrips of Nyakisharara airstrip in Mbarara or Kasese air strip.

The major activity is Chimpanzee Trekking. Other activities include chimpanzee habituation, nature walks and birding. This park known to have the highest concentration of primates in the world.

Therefore, primate’s safaris like chimpanzee trekking will be incomplete without this park on your itinerary.
