The smallest national park in Uganda of 33.7 Sq Km and  known as Where gold meets silver. Mgahinga gorilla national park covers the Uganda’s slopes of the three Virunga volcanoes which is shared by Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. It adjoins volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park in Congo. Being part of the Virunga conservation area, it protects almost half of the mountain gorillas where by the rest are in Bwindi impenetrable forest in Uganda.

Mgahinga gorillas national park is a home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys The park is a home to 76 mammal species and 115 bird species. Mammals in this park include the endangered mountain gorillas, and golden monkeys, elephants, buffaloes, leopard and giant forest hog among others.

The major activity in Mgahinga gorilla national park is gorilla trekking of the habituated Nyakagezi family. This tracking  restricted to persons of 15 years and above. Golden money tracking is another activity and the volcanoes are the remaining stronghold of these endangered monkeys.

Nature walk is another activity and the trailhead for it is at Ntebeko visitor center. Volcano climbing is also done since Mgahinga raises upwards to three of the sic volcanic summits of the Viruga. Muhavura is the highest peak at 4,127 meters, Gahinga at 3,474 meters and Sabinyo at 3,669 meters.

The Batwa trail is an exciting activity in Mgahinga. Previously, the Batwa had lived in the forest and depended on it for food and medicine. Today, they guide visitors to the lower slopes introducing them to their old homes showing and demonstrating the skills they used to survive in these forests.

Accessing Mgahinga gorilla national park can be by road or by air. By road which is 5 24 km from Kampala. It is a surfaced road from Kampala to Kisoro via Mbarara. By air you can use daily flights which operate from Entebbe international airport to Kisoro airfields.
