Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe forest national park found in the western Albertine rift valley is a home to chimpanzees in Rwanda. And other 13 primate’s species. This is the richest national park in terms of numbers: 1060 recorded plant species, 200 tree species. 13 primates’ species, 300 bird species and 85 mammal species. Known as a birders paradise, Nyungwe national park is a rich biodiverse park. And a haven of activities and attractions for visitors.

Nyungwe national park has is one of the oldest and conserved tropical rain forests in Africa. It has been a forest reserve since 1933 to 2006 when it was upgraded to a national park. In terms of size, it covers an area of 1,019 Sq. km of dense Afromontane forests. Bamboo covered slopes, grassland and wetlands and is located in the south western part of Rwanda.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe national park.

Three communities of chimpanzees are visited by tourists daily. Chimpanzees are the famous primates that live in Nyungwe forests and visitors take long walks to spend one full hour with them in their natural habitats. More than 400 chimpanzees are in Nyungwe visitors pay dollars to trek them. Nyungwe is the only destination for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda. Chimpanzees are different from gorillas in that, they live in groups whereas the later live in families. Other primates are black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys among others. a

Canopy walk.

Nyungwe national park is famous due to this popular activity by tourist, walking on the canopy which hangs 60 meters high and 200 meters long. This experience of walking on top of the forests is of its kind and the only East Africa canopy walkway where you enjoy a full spectacular view of Nyungwe forest. This canopy walk takes 1-2 hours where you can view mammals and birds and it is open to all tourist who are willing to pay for it.

This is one of the popular activities in Nyungwe national park and is one of the ways to enjoy the beauty of the forest. You can enjoy the various tree species during the trails and the beautiful flowers, wildlife and butterfly species. This activity depends on your fitness where by with the professional guide you can choose to take half a day or full day nature walk.

Birding in Nyungwe national park.

With more than 300 bird species, Nyungwe is known as the top destination for birding enthusiasts in Rwanda. You can spot the bird species that are endemic to the Albertine rift valley like Rockfellers sunbird, chapin’s flycatcher, red collared mountain babber and Rwenzori turaco among others.
