Rwenzori mountains national park also known as the mystical challenge and one of the beautiful places you can visit in Uganda. A snow caped mountain ranges in the heart of Africa referred to as the mountains of the moon. Explorer Henry Stanley after locating these mountain ranges concluded that, though Lake Victoria is the primary source of the Nile. This world longest river also supplied by melt waters from the snow on this mountain ranges.

Known to have the equatorial glacier, it is only on Mount Rwenzori where you can find snow at the equator. This is why climbers are always fascinated to have such a sight on their climbing to Margarita Peak on Mt. Stanley which is 5,109 meters above sea level. This is the third highest point in Africa and  recognized as a world heritage site in 1994 by UNESCO.

Rwenzori national park a home to 18 mammal species, 220 bird species 6 amphibian species, and 9 species of reptiles. Mammals to be sighted are elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hog, chimpanzees, leopards and waterbucks among others. They are present in the forest zone.

Mountain trekking is the major activity in this park and various routes ascend to the summit. Kilembe trails enables 9 days’ expedition, Nyakalengija trail leads you to the summit in 7 days. You can also opt for Bukurungu trail. Dry season is the best time for this mountain climbing adventure. Hiking, forest walk and birding are other activities on this mountain.

You can access Rwenzori mountains national park from Kampala to Fort Portal- Kasese route. Between Fort Portal and Kasese is where you can access trails like Mubuku valley at Mihunga or Bukurungu trail at Nyakigumba.
