18 Days Uganda Primates & Big Five Tour

This safari of 18 Days Uganda Primates & Big Five Tour covers all corners from Eastern to Northern and to western back to central part of the country. The national parks to visit include; Kidepo Valley National Park, Murchison falls National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Lake Mburo national park. You will truly enjoy the source of river Nile and Sipi falls outside these parks. You will encounter the big 5 animals, Primates, birds and many others. The Safari starts from  Source of River Nile in Jinja is a fascinating adventure where you take a boat up to the point where River Nile departs from Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in Africa with fresh water.  Experience the vibes of the water as it starts of a three-month journey to Mediterranean Sea.

Safari destinations

Sipi falls

Located the eastern region at the foothills of Mountain Elgon in Kapchorwa district. It is an adventurous destination as you start with the highest waterfalls of 100 meters, then 85 and to 75 meters. This hiking adventure will come with photo moments from different angles where you will take amazing photos for memories.

Kidepo valley

Well known to be the most magnificent wilderness. It is another hidden gem were you will enjoy the beautiful scenery in the wilderness of Karamojong area where the population is sparse but with am a breathtaking view. It is located in the North Eastern Corner of Uganda in Kaabong district. The park hosts over 75 mammal species like black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, cheetah, Giraffes etc. and 475 bird species like Egyptian vulture, Pygmy falcon, 18 Days Uganda Primates, Ostrich, Verreaux’s eagle, Yellow-rumped Seedeater, Karamoja apalis etc. Your visit to this park will give an opportunity to see 4 mammals of the big five family (Lions, Leopards, Buffaloes, Elephants).

 Murchison Falls National Park

From there you will drive  Murchison Falls National Park which is known as the top destination for tourists due to the wonders in this park like rapid falls, 4 out of the big 5 animals etc. It is found in the western region of Uganda and covers districts like Masindi, Buliisa, Amuru, Pakwach, Kiryandongo and Nwoya. The park covers 3840 Sq. km and is the oldest national park in Uganda. This park is a home to 76 mammal species including 4 members of the big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo). You can also encounter Rhinos at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Other animals to expect in this park include crocodiles, water bucks, giraffes, 18 Days Uganda Primates, warthogs, Uganda kobs, hartebeest, Hippos, Bushbucks, Oribis, hyenas and various bird species like black bee eater, rare shoebill stork, weavers, grey crowned cranes, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Black-headed lapwing, Red throated bee eater among others.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

After Murchison Falls National Park, you will you will visit Queen Elizabeth National Park the 6th diverse national park in the world. It has beautiful features such as Kazinga Channel, Crater lakes, Savannah plains etc. On your mazing boat cruise, you will spot highest concentration of hippos along the Kazinga channel and other mammals and cats not forgetting the famous tree climbing lions.  There are more than 600 bird species like grey crowned cranes, Martial eagle, shoebill, African green pigeon, handsome francolin, Nubian wood pecker, swamp flycatcher, African skimmer etc..

Kibale Forest National Park

From there you will proceed to Kibale Forest National Park “primate’s capital” found in Kabarole district. It has about 13 primate species including monkeys, baboons and chimpanzees. The major activity here is chimpanzee trekking where you will explore the forest with the highest number of chimpanzees in Uganda. Some of the primates include colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, Olive baboons, Anubis baboons etc.  They are all for the exploration on this amazing trip. The park also harbors over 375 species of birds like African pied wagtail, Great blue turaco, Pin-tailed whydah, Slender-billed weaver, Tropical boubou etc.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

The ultimate gorilla experience is where you will have the gorilla trekking. This is the epic of the adventure and you will explore the rare and endangered gorillas in their natural habitats. Bwindi impenetrable Forest National Park a home to 54% of the world remaining mountain gorillas. The park has about 459 Mountain Gorillas with 21 habituated families living in all the sectors of the park which include Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija. You will spend a day tracking mountain gorillas, taking their pictures and enjoying their behavior however, you will have a chance to visit these amazing primates very close in their natural habitats and lastly you will visit the Batwa community and know their way of living.

Lake Bunyonyi

The Trip will end at Lake Bunyonyi is located in the extreme border between Uganda and Rwanda and it is known for offering a great rest and relaxation to travelers due to its beautiful and breathtaking views.  Lake Bunyonyi is the deepest lake in Uganda having 29 different Islands, a fresh climate to relax from and also a clear view of the Virunga Mountains.

 

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International airport and hotel transfer

Day 1 of the 18 days Uganda primates & big five tour will start will a pick up from Entebbe International Airport by our professional driver guide from Mutanda Gorilla Tours who will brief you about the 18 days Uganda primates & big five tour. He will then transfer you to your hotel for relaxation as you get ready for your road transfer. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Transfer to Jinja Source of the Nile

On your second day of your safari, you will have early breakfast and then transfer to Jinja by road. Along the way, you will enjoy roasted chicken in Mabira forest before you enter Jinja. You will then proceed to Jinja and check in at your hotel for lunch. After lunch you will go for city tour where you will interact with the locals especially market venders. Depending on our time, you will also do water biking which is a new activity in Jinja on Lake Victoria.

Day 3: Jinja – Visiting the source of the Nile and transfer to Sipi falls

You will wake up early morning for a hot breakfast, there after you will be picked by your guide to take you to the source of the Nile. You will take a boat up to the point where the Nile separates from Lake Victoria. This exercise takes only one hour and you will spend more time exploring the crafts shops and hiking along the Nile. You will have lunch in Jinja town and then proceed to Sipi falls. You will travel while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Eastern Uganda. Upon arrival, you will check in in your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Full Exploration of Sipi falls and Community Experience

Wake up early in the morning for a heavy breakfast on the 4th day of the safari with a hike to sipi falls which may take about 3 hours. There are 3 falls, the 100m, 85m and 75m. You will explore all of them plus the caves. Also expect to see some birds like Tecazze sunbird, 18 Days Uganda Primates, black collared Apalis, black shouldered kite, bush shrikes etc. You will return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Later in the evening, you will visit the Bagisu community and learn about their culture. The most outstanding of this is the brewing of coffee. From the tree to the cup for you to taste the African coffee is what makes this trip adventurous. After engaging with local people, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park – Evening game drive.

You will wake up early for a hot breakfast and check out of your lodge, afterwards you will embark on a journey to Kidepo Valley National Park. This is a beautiful and scenic journey full of adventure especially of Mount Elgon areas. On arrival, you will check into your accommodation, have lunch and take a rest. Later in the evening, you will head out for an evening game drive where you will be able to sight cheetah, aardwolf striped hyena, herds of buffaloes, zebras, lions among other animals of Kidepo valley national park.

Day 6: Kidepo Valley National Park – Morning Game Drive – Community Visits

After breakfast on this day, you will head out for a morning game drive. This is the best time to see predators like lions and hyenas among others in action. You will sight different wildlife like herds of buffaloes, elephants, leopards, zebras, 18 Days Uganda Primates, warthogs, Bush pigs among others. Also birds like Ostriches, Karamojong Apalis, Egyptian vulture, black bee eaters as well as primates on your early morning game drive.

Kanangorok hot spring is another highlight you will see in this beautiful park. You will return to your lodge for hot lunch and short rest. Later in the evening you will have a visit to karamajong villages and homesteads just similar to the Maasai tribe of Kenya. You will enter in their huts as you appreciate their community settlement in their huts called Manyattas. Enjoy their cultural dances and handmade crafts. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight Stay.

Day 7: Kidepo Valley National Park – Morning Game drive and transfer to Murchison Falls National park

You will wake up early morning for a hot breakfast and check out of your lodge.  You will be picked by your driver guide for a morning game drive as you exit the park. Sight animals that you missed the previous day such like herds of buffaloes and elephants among others in the northern part of the park crossing Kidepo River. You will have lunch on the way and proceed to Murchison falls national park the most fascinating destination. On arrival, you will check into your lodge froe dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8:  Murchison Falls National Park – Morning Game Drive – Afternoon Boat Cruise

You will wake up early morning for a hot breakfast on this day and start game drive through different trails in the park like Buligi trail, Albert trail, Victoria trail and others where you will be able to spot animals like elephants, giraffes, 18 Days Uganda Primates, warthogs, elands, Uganda cobs and big cats like lions and leopards. Buffaloes are also spotted in big numbers in this national park. After this game drive, you go back to the lodge for lunch as you get ready for the afternoon boat cruise.

Later in the afternoon, embark on an afternoon boat cruise upstream to the bottom of the falls. You will see the Nile crocodiles resting on the shores, giraffes, Bufaloes, herds of hippos while in water, bird species like the black bee eater, grey crowned crane, marabou stork and many others, you will have a view of the magnificent Murchison falls as it roars and pours its waters through a narrow gorge. The experience lasts for three hours. You will then return to your lodge for evening relaxation, dinner and overstay.

Day 9: Murchison Falls National Park – Morning Game drive – top of the falls – transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

You will wake up early morning for a hot breakfast on this day. You will head out for a morning game drive in the park where you will spot different animals like elephants, Giraffes, warthogs, lions, Leopards, Buffaloes in both the savannah and forested part of Murchison falls. After this experience, you will now hike to the top of the falls viewpoint to see, hear and feel the falls roaring. You will reach the breathtaking point where John Speke stood to affirm that Uganda is indeed the Pearl of Africa.

You will hike at these falls and enjoy the stunning beauty of Uganda. Nature and animals as you contemplate the rapids of the amazing river Nile forcing in a 7 meters gorge falling more than 40 meters deep. You will return to your lodge for lunch and sign out. After this amazing Adventure, you will embark on the journey to Kibale Forest National Park where you will arrive and check in your lodge.

Day 10: Kibale Forest National Park – chimpanzee treking

After your early morning breakfast, meet your driver guide and then proceed to the briefing point. This is where you will be told about the dos and don’ts before you start off your trekking journey. This briefing is done by the professional game rangers and they want to make sure that you get the best experience with the primates. After the briefing, you will start off the trekking exercise to look for chimpanzees in the forests.

The park has more than 13 primates, therefore on your way you will encounter other primates like Red-tailed Monkeys, Black And White Colobus Monkeys, L’Hoest Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Blue Monkeys etc. This exercise depends on where you find these primates because nature can be unpredictable in its own way. Upon finding them, you will spend one full hour with them. In the presence of the professional game ranger, you will have a lot to learn about chimpanzees. You will observe how they use simple tools and their appearances. This is amazing moment and you will easily spot the difference between them and gorillas. After this trekking exercise, you will get back to your lodge for lunch and take a rest from the long distance fatigues.  Dinner and overnight Stay.

Day 11: Bigodi Swamp nature walk and Cultural experiences

Wake up early in the morning and start your day with a heavy delicious breakfast after prepare for Bigodi Swamp walk. This wet land is known to have the presence of different monkey species like black and white colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and also Baboons. You can also spot forest elephants as they sneak to the neighboring gardens from the forest. You will get back to your lodge for lunch and take a rest. In the evening, you will visit the local community and experience their traditional way of life. You can take part in their activities like brewing coffee (coffee experience) and also learn about different herbs and how they use them to treat different diseases. You will get back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National park and evening game drive

Wake up to an early morning breakfast, there after you will be picked up by our driver guide and begin your journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park the medley of wonders. The park is known to be the most diverse national park in Uganda. You will arrive and check in your lodge and have lunch. Relax as you prepare for the evening game drive. Afterwards, you will set out for an evening game drive in Kasenyi plains. During the game drive, you will encounter animals like buffaloes, leopards, bush pigs, and some bird species like swamp flycatcher, Marital eagle, shoe bill, Black bee eaters etc. you will take photos during the experience for memory. After the activity, you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 13: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Morning Game Drive – Boat cruise on Kazinga channel

Wake up early in the morning and start your day with a heavy delicious breakfast, afterwards prepare for the morning game drive. The game drive takes place in Kasenyi plains where you will get an opportunity to see buffaloes, leopards, bush pigs, and some bird species like swamp flycatcher, Marital eagle, shoe bill, Black bee eaters etc. You will also get a chance to take photos of these animals. Thereafter you will get back to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. After lunch, you will go for a boat cruise on Kazinga Channel, while on the boat you will be able to sight animals like Elephants, Buffaloes, Hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks etc. and bird species like African Jacana, African skimmer, rare shoe bill etc. and other attractions of the park. After this experience, you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 14: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park via Ishasha sector for Tree climbing Lions

Upon waking up in the morning, you will have a delicious breakfast then after check out from the lodge. You will start your journey to Ishasha sector in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park is famous because of the tree climbing lions and this attraction is eye catching hence leaving you satisfied with the activity. You will also search for topis, monkeys, leopards etc. Thereafter, you will proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park which is located in the South West of Uganda in Kanungu District. You will enjoy the scenic landscape and the beautiful hills of Kigezi region. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 15: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – Gorilla Trekking – Nature walk

 Wake up early in the morning and have a hot breakfast, You will be driven to the starting point for a briefing on the Do’s and the Don’ts by a park ranger who will guide you during the trek, the trek takes about 1 to 5 hours depending on their location. You will learn a lot about their Lifestyle and behaviors. Gorillas stay in families and you will therefore have a chance to visit one of these families. As nature is unpredictable, you will look for these primates in the forest.

Therefore, you can either find them earlier or later on your adventure. After the experience, you will return back to your accommodation for lunch. Later, you will head out for Nature walk that will provide relaxed opportunities to explore one of Uganda’s rainforests. Bwindi impenetrable Forest National Park has several nature walk trails that you can follow during the guided nature walk such as Muyangwa waterfall trail in Buhoma sector, Rushura hill walk, Buhoma-Nkuringo trail, Ivi river trail etc.

Day 16: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – Batwa Experience – Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After your breakfast, you will be picked from your lodge with your belongings as you visit the Batwa community. You will be welcomed by their amazing dances and learn how they used to stay in the forests. Visit their shrines and markets as you learn about their way of life. You will then proceed to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation. Check in and have lunch and then full relaxation. Take an evening canoe to one of the islands called Punishment Island. This is a place where pregnant girls were abandoned and left to starve to death in case of pregnancy before marriage. You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 17: Lake Bunyonyi – Morning canoeing – birding watching

You will have your breakfast and then proceed with a morning bird watching experience on canoe. Lake Bunyonyi means a place of little birds so you expect the birds like Crested cranes, Pied kingfisher, Malachite kingfisher, Cinnamon-chested Bee eater, Bronzy sun bird, Grey shrike, 18 Days Uganda Primates, Grey crowned crested crane, Swamp fly catcher, Black heron etc. The most amazing experience on this lake

Day 18: Transfer to back to Entebbe International Airport or Hotel

Have your early breakfast, check out and start your journey back to Entebbe international airport. The journey will take you through Ankole region with their impressing long-horned Ankole cattle with an en-route stopover at the equator imaginary line for water experience, taking photos and have lunch.  Then you will proceed with your drive to Entebbe international airport for your return flight. This marks the end of your 18 days Uganda Primates & Big Five tour.
